Hurghada Taxis and Transport: Your Ultimate Guide for Getting Around

Hey Hurghadians!

Feeling like getting out of your hotel and exploring Hurghada a bit? Well then, let’s find you the best ride! In Hurghada, there are plenty of ways to get around—from fancy hotel limos that are spacious and cosy, to microbuses where you might have to squeeze in a bit. Whether you’re after an expensive ride, a cheap ride, or something in between, we’ve got you covered. Let’s check out the transport options in Hurghada!

The Infamous Orange Taxi

If you’ve ever stepped a foot outside your hotel, you’ve no doubt seen one of those Orange Taxis lurking—or even parked—right outside. There are so many of these taxis in Hurghada that, at times, they’re all you can see on the street! They’re everywhere, zooming around the city 24/7.

Should you get one?

If you’re in a hurry, it’s easiest to hail an Orange Taxi since they’re always available. But, they aren’t necessarily the best when it comes to comfort! Many of these taxis have broken air conditioners, and almost none of them use their meters—so be sure to agree on a price before hopping in.

If it’s too hot outside, you might want to skip the Orange Taxi and opt for something with working air conditioning, as Hurghada’s summer heat can be sweltering.

That said, Orange Taxis can be fun! Many drivers blast local music, the interiors are often decked out with crazy lights (you can practically throw a mini-party inside!), and the drivers are usually very friendly and chatty.

Expect to pay at least 25-100 EGP for a short trip, and over 200 EGP if you’re crossing the city. Always pay in Egyptian pounds—it’s cheaper and makes getting change easier.

Microbuses

Microbuses are the go-to transport for locals, offering fixed routes and being far cheaper than other options. They usually cost less than 10 EGP and can take you around the city during the day and evening. Some popular routes are Al Dahar – Arabia Street, Al Dahar – Al Ahyaa, and Al Dahar – Al Sakala.

Hopping onto one is easy—just flag it down! But squeezing in? Well, that’s another story! These buses are often packed, so you may need to ask someone to budge or even get off briefly to make space for you.

The drivers are locals, and people are very friendly. Many expats in Hurghada use microbuses daily—it’s a safe, inexpensive option.

Uber and Similar Services

Uber is quite popular in Hurghada and offers a more comfortable ride compared to Orange Taxis. The cars are generally in better condition, and crucially, they have working air conditioners! Prices are often similar to or cheaper than the Orange Taxis, as Uber gives you a fair quote based on the distance, so you won’t face any surprise fees. A short trip usually starts at around 25 EGP.

inDrive – The Locals’ Choice

Another popular option is inDrive, a local alternative to Uber. It’s often cheaper than Uber and has become the preferred option for many locals and expats alike.

What sets inDrive apart from Uber is the unique feature that allows you to “bid” for your fare among multiple drivers, rather than simply accepting the quoted price. When you search for a ride and select your destination, you’ll receive offers from various drivers eager to take you. This means you can choose a price that fits your budget, enabling you to snag great rides at bargain rates!

Don’t overpay!

Some drivers might try to charge you more than what’s quoted on the app, coming up with all sorts of excuses. Don’t fall for it! Simply decline and find another ride.

Car Rentals

Renting a car in Hurghada is a fantastic option if you plan to explore the city or travel to other cities like Luxor or Cairo. To rent a car in Egypt, you’ll need an International Driving Permit (IDP), which can easily be obtained from your home country before your trip.

Rental prices start at around 800 EGP per day for a small car and can go up to 5,000 EGP for larger vehicles. You’ll need your IDP and passport when signing the rental contract, and we highly recommend getting an insured car for peace of mind in case of accidents.

Petrol Prices

Most cars in Egypt run on Unleaded 92, while newer models use Unleaded 95.

  • Unleaded 92 costs 13.75 EGP per litre
  • Unleaded 95 costs 15 EGP per litre

Walking Around

If you’re up for it, walking is always a great way to explore the city! Just make sure to wear comfy trainers, carry some water, and maybe pop on a hat if it’s sunny.

Safety Tips

Getting around Hurghada is generally safe, both during the day and at night—even if it’s midnight, you can still comfortably walk around or hail a taxi.

That said, there have been instances where taxi and Uber drivers have tried to overcharge. They might attempt to double or even triple the usual fare. So, always ask for the price beforehand, and try to pay in Egyptian pounds to avoid any confusion with change.
